Pavlov Knew of Which He Spoke

There are many excellent things to be said about daycare. Beyond the advantages of socialization, trained ECE experts, and regular outings, daycare exposes your child to routines which, if my household is any indication, are much more rigidly followed at the daycare than in my own house on the weekend.

To boot, these routines are not unlike Pavlovian training, I've since discovered.

If you say to Jakey, "We're going on a walk," he immediately searches for the stroller.

He demands that it be unfolded.

And then he stands next to it with his hand on the side bar, waiting to go for the walk.

Does he want the stroller there in case he gets tired? Is he being possessive of the stroller in case his older brother wants to hitch a ride?

Oh no.

When the daycare "goes for a walk", the kids who prefer to walk can only do so if they hold onto the handles on the side of the stroller.

It took me 5 minutes to convince Jakey that he didn't have to hold onto the stroller for this walk.

I think I'm going to rename him Fido.

Heh - too cute. Geekling isn't in daycare, so I won't benefit from the assistance with routine. I try and take her to Early Years centres for socialization.

She is a bit fixated on her umbrella stroller though. She prefers to push it herself to riding in it. I'm going to have to cave and buy her a toy one...

That's really quite amazing.

Surely there is some way you can twist this innocent response into something which can benefit you and/ or lessen your workload?

Adorable! My kids used to be very good, incredibly healthy eaters when they were in daycare. Here, fruit snacks are the closest they'll come to fruit. It absolutely comes back to the routines.

I wonder if I can send them back for a remedial course...

ha! What I found out on the first day of kindergarten is that the training is a huge blessing - there was a line, pumpkinpie joined the line and walked in the door without a pause. Perfect! Thanks be for daycare...
