The sun's coming. It's been warm, welcoming weather. We bought a patio heater and some lounging furniture. I'm looking forward to spending some summer nights cuddled up to a French Pinot and a good book.
I've got some Pinots in the cellar. What I don't have are some good book selections.
I like all kinds of reading, from chick lit to award winners. My only criteria? A good story I can sink into.
I could never pick a top ten list, but here are some (of the more serious lit) stories that have grabbed me in the recent past:
1. A Fine Balance
2. The Kite Runner
3. The Poisonwood Bible
4. Memory Keeper's Daughter
5. The Secret Life of Bees
6. Not Wanted on the Voyage
7. Oryx and Crake
8. This Much I Know is True
9. She's Come Undone
10. Fall On Your Knees
11. The Book of Negroes
Can you help me? Do you have any suggestions. I like chick lit and murder mysteries too (I call it brain candy). Give my Pinot a partner.

11 Heard through the grapevine:
I would definitely recommend Shantaram or The In-Between World of Vikram Lal - LOVED both of them!
Thanks Kelly! Keep sending the suggestions folks. I have a whole summer to get through.
I would suggest Mary Lawson's books. I just finished Crow Lake and The Other Side of the Bridge which were both very good. Plus, she's a Canadian author and reminds me a bit of Margaret Lawrence.
I LOVE Jodi Picoult books! Her books have various topics (murder mystery, psychology, religion) intertwined with the legal system. I just finished reading Keeping Faith, My sister's Keeper and A Plain Truth...couldn't put them down!
Hi, I'm new - love your blog. Some of my recent favs included The Birth House by Amy McKay, A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews and Lullabies for Little Criminals by Heather O'Neill. Happy reading!
Stolen Life The Journey of a Cree Woman-Rudy Weibe and Yvonne Johnson
Comeback a mother and daughters journey through hell and back-Claire Fontaine and Mia Fontaine
Both GREAT reads, but have tissues handy. They are definite read more than once books.
Everything by Jhumpa Lahiri -- her most recent is a collection of short stories called Unaccustomed Earth.
I'd second Shantaram. It took me awhile to get into it (there were days I'd be reading when I realized I was editing it in my head!), but I did end up enjoying it. I am reading Little Bee at the moment, and recently finished Geek Love. Heaven help me I'm reading a young adult novel at the moment (purely for work purposes!), so I'll spare you that one!
Have you read Wally Lamb's latest? The Hour I First Believed?
My list is growing. This is awesome and thanks everyone. Keep the suggestions pouring in!
Archie's Digest #256.
Books, pinot, a HEATER, oooh, you are my kinda girl. There are many I have loved on your list, though Poisonwood Bible is my least fave of Kingsolver's. A beautiful summer read (or anytime read. good for Earth Day too) is Prodigal Summer. It is the kind of book that has characters whose stories you still want to hear even after the book is done.
Am reading History of Love, by Alison Nauss and it is gorgeous. Story & prose-wise.
Came late to The Time Traveller's Wife but it was as good as everyone told me it would be.
There, now please pass the pinot noir. Perhaps a nice bottle from the Golden Mile in the interior? Road 13 maybe?
